Kurà means jaguar in the language of the Borucans, a local tribe, and it is a fitting name for a stay that celebrates both wildlife and the indigenous. Devil masks – important cultural symbols for the Borucan people – are the dominant art in common areas and private quarters. Much of the property is constructed using glistening teak and translucent glass, the better to view the surrounding nature. The plush pool deck is adorned with modern Balinese furnishings and oversized purple hammocks.

We were very sad to leave this tropical paradise. The hotel is a bumpy 40-minute drive, usually undertaken in a private 4x4 away from civilization which is one of the best things about it. From this height, the views of the ocean, jungle-covered mountains and sunset are unparalleled, and the hotel provides all the indulgences and accoutrements a couple could ask for. A complimentary shuttle runs to the beach and back each day, and the town of Uvita offers kayaking, surfing, hiking and seasonal whale watching. Through a Vortex telescope, visitors can get a close-up of the distant coastline that resembles a whale’s tail at low tide and may be lucky enough to see real migrating humpbacks. At the edge of the property, the exceedingly tranquil Spa Shà features a variety of treatments including an hour-long couple's massage dubbed 'Kura Paradise'.

The kitchen specialises in fusion dishes and seafood, offering a tantalising octopus and avocado cocktail and a delicate yellow fin tuna sashimi, but the steak sandwich wasn’t particularly inspired. Breakfast options include a yummy version of the Tico favourite gallo pinto, with coffee, juice, beans, rice, eggs and fresh fruit. Our room had a beautiful view and was very spacious. The restaurant and poolside area is also very peaceful and stunning. The staff are super friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable of the area. Couples may opt to spend the majority of the stay in their quarters which are extremely comfortable and arranged with intimacy in mind.

How far is Kura Boutique Hotel Member of the Cayuga Collection from the centre of Uvita?

You’ll feel Alè and Martin’s fearless and forward-thinking spirit here. All the facilities and the view are amazing. The IPad for communicating and their quick answers was perfect. That you have a shuttle to the beach was also really nice. Right next to the pool and the room, you can spot a lot of animals. The Infinity Villas are slightly larger than the Junior Suite Villas with extra-wide terraces for guests who want to spend time in the sun, enjoying the inspirations of ocean and jungle views.

With over 35 years of experience, we make the difference between a good trip and a lifetime memory. Prices have been converted from the hotel’s local currency (USD428.67), via openexchangerates.org, using today’s exchange rate. We provide personalised recommendations based on your activity on our platform. If you prefer, you can opt-out of this option. Keep in mind, opting-out only affects your current device.

Both suites have private outdoor infinity plunge pools and outdoor showers. Kura Design Villas is truly more than just a place to stay – it becomes an experience in its own right! Visit the Sky Lounge, with 360 views of the dense jungle greenery and the vast ocean. Take a second visit to the Sky Lounge at night to be transported into the best of romantic experiences – with a stunning array of stars that transform the spot into a magical hideaway. There is no better spot for a jaguar colada than the sky lounge, a private deck atop Kurà’s restaurant, where couples celebrating an occasion can also opt for a candlelit dinner under the stars.

At Kura, we offer small and private tours to help you experience it all. A boutique, adults-only hotel high in the Uvita rainforest. Kura is an exclusive destination in its own right. Children under 16 are not allowed and the hotel mainly attracts honeymooners and other couples.

Staff members are kind and well trained; upon arrival all guests are greeted by name. Lovebirds looking to escape from it all can't do better than the Kurà, the country’s sexiest hotel. There are two Master Suite Villas both at over 1,000 square feet. These are perfect for romance and honeymoons, with ocean and jungle views. They are located at the highest point of the property with the most commanding views.

I will repeat the that staff truly cared about every moment of our experience and did everything they could to improve our time in Uvita. Our 8 Luxury Suites, tropical minimalist design, and panoramic views set the stage for ultra-personalized luxury, relaxation, and privacy. If you haven’t entered any dates, the rate shown is provided directly by the hotel and represents the cheapest double room (including tax) available in the next 60 days. As the most discerning, up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel, Condé Nast Traveler is the global citizen’s bible and muse, offering both inspiration and vital intel.

It was difficult to take our eyes away from that view. The hotel is very quiet because there are only a few rooms, this means that hotel guests say hello all the time which was great - everyone was so friendly. The staff knew everyone by name.the pool is incredible and the whole place is backed by rainforest. We saw toucans 2 of the 3 nights we stayed.

The Kura Boutique Hotel was no less than incredible in every way. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and loved well before we arrived. Each time that we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by the staff by name and with refreshments.

A king-sized white bed anchors the room, while a hot-red lighting option is activated at turndown. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors give way to expansive terraces offering breathtaking views of the jungle and coastline. The bathroom contains river-stone sinks, a private loo compartment and an enormous shower with two rainfall spouts and more sexy red lights. Wi-Fi and iPads are available; phones and televisions are not. The result is Alè and Martin’s stunning expression of tropical minimalist design.

We have some new wide-legged jumpers coming out on June 8th that almost appear to be dresses but are actually jumpers, and I think those are perfect for a wedding or dressier event. After about four months of selling out of each limited edition piece, I was able to afford a seamstress to work with me. I also found my business partner, Erin, who was able to take on the business side of the operation. Today, Hackwith Design House offers a wide collection of timeless designs and quality pieces that afford women to quite literally wear their values on their sleeves. Passionate about textiles since she was first gifted a sewing machine by her mother, she launched Hackwith Design House to produce limited edition fashion at affordable prices.

We are so thankful that our customers have joined us in this venture to create beautiful, ethically made clothing that is also sustainable for our environment. Everything is made in-house in our Minnesota studio by our talented team of seamstresses. To reduce waste, many of our items are not made until ordered by you. HDH's simple and clean aesthetic, quality fabrics, and impeccable attention to detail have made it a favorite of style-conscious women around the world.

From there, it’s a matter of retraining your brain to plan for the true cost of clothing and being willing to invest in timeless pieces that you can wear over and over again. For our part, we are hoping to make it easier for our customers to invest in sustainable pieces with the launch of our new project The Sustain Shop on June 4th. People are able to send in their old HDH pieces for a $20 gift card (per piece) and shop gently used and one-of-a-kind samples at discounted prices. I was a one-woman show when I first launched the website, so I wasn’t able to produce more than a limited number of pieces each Monday. From my studio art background, I knew artists often did limited edition prints, so that inspired me to do some limited edition pieces.

We've grown to offer additional lines including Core Collection, Swim, Basics, and Plus. Caylon Hackwith is a photographer, videographer, and art director. He began his career in art galleries and post-production studios fabricating large scale artworks for international exhibitions. He now produces images for architects, designers, hotels, and brands, as well as maintaining his own studio practice. He is perpetually seeking for a clean, minimal aesthetic that communicates beautifully and effectively. Although, he will always have a soft spot for the wild, bucolic landscape of his native Montana.

Each dress is ethically made with OEKO-TEX certified fibers and nontoxic dyes, and if you don’t see your size listed, Loud Bodies will also make a custom order just for you—free of charge! Add a pop of color or pattern to your day with Kemi Telford’s dresses. This UK-based designer uses African wax paints inspired by her upbringing in Nigeria.

With cozy essentials, seasonal colors, kids’ and extended sizing, and build-your-own sets, there’s truly something for everyone. (And when you’re done, MATE has a take-back program!) All locally made, within 15 miles of its LA office. On DRESSING UP (L) I love wearing jumpers to dressier occasions. It's such a fun way to dress up that is not a typical cocktail dress.

Generously sized guestrooms and suites recall pied-à-terres with a warm backdrop of earthy shades. Hotel Alma is definitely where I would stay if I was visiting the Twin Cities. The design, by my friend Talin Spring, is beautiful and the on-site café and restaurant are two of the best places to eat in town. I’ve even considered doing a staycation there because it’s just so pretty. Another place I love to eat is Young Joni, one of Minneapolis’s best new restaurants.

In essence, this is what eclectic style decor is all about – mixing the old, the new, the modern, and the classic. Simple painted walls will create a solid foundation to bring in eclectic decor and add interest elsewhere. Adding vibrant accessories to a plain backdrop is far easier than adding plain accessories to a busy backdrop; you’ll have far more alternatives. And since eclectic interior design is all about experimentation and play, do have fun with the freedom it allows.

"It’s not just about what you display. Sometimes it’s about what you leave out." Without a place for the eye to rest, an eclectic interior can quickly lose its point of view. “Avoid the inclination toward too many focal points,” says designer Stefani Stein. A tidy definition of eclectic style in interior design is tough to pin down. Known for mixing and matching, the outcome is often a layered look that’s entirely individual, with bits and pieces from old and new styles in one.

From playful tiles and bold wallpaper to bright accessories and statement lighting fixtures, the bathroom is a great place to let your personality shine. By infusing color and unique decor into your bathroom, you can create a space that not only sparks creativity while you get ready for the day, but also leaves you feeling refreshed and inspired every time you step in. Mixing and matching furniture for that eclectic feel is all about identifying the proportions, scales, and shapes that will work well together, and with the wider room. Matching furniture sets have little personality outside of a show home and can send the whole room into a state of stagnant slumber.

Because of this premise, many misinterpret the eclectic style as an anything-goes way of decorating, but the true eclectic style is actually very purposeful and well thought-out. The look is not about simply throwing things together, but combining decor styles in a way that is fully intentional. Unlike some styles, which adhere to a strict set of rules and trends, the eclectic look doesn't have as many requirements. The eclectic style involves incorporating pieces from different periods and styles. Repeat and alternate textures to create an eclectic home that's visually and tactilely stimulating.

In the interior above, Davis embraced a variety of unique frames to create layers of visual interest. "Some of the pieces don't have frames, some are ornate gilt frames, others are chrome or wood," explains Davis. "The days of a gallery wall where everything has the same black frame are over." In the modern farmhouse living room above, Kratzer used pops of color to create harmony between the rustic and modern decor. “The framed quilt was one of the starting points for this space and then I continued to add pops of the colors found in the quilt throughout the space,” she says.

The neighborhood has blossomed into the heart of the interior design trade for West Coasters. The beautiful mix of re-edition and antique home design and eclectic home design stores is the perfect fit for Mecox’s eclectic home furnishings, art and accessories. The La Cienega Design Quarter where Mecox is housed, has been a fan favorite for years. Located on La Cienega Boulevard and stretching from Beverly Boulevard to Santa Monica Boulevard, this district is famous for its art galleries, antique shops and of course home furniture and décor stores. Have fun with it and incorporate bright rugs, colorful accents, and an eclectic mix of furniture. Adding pops of color and personality to your living room is a surefire way to make it a lively gathering place.

This love leads to the fabulous incorporation of one-of-a-kind pieces into her designs. This space-saving layout allows for unencumbered views of the charing fireplace. Shelving that traces the perimeter of the room, meanwhile, draws the eye upward while allowing Ferrer to display his collections. Don’t have the budget (or super) to allow for architectural elements? Nobody puts baby in a corner...except when baby is a custom blue velvet sofa. In designer Charlie Ferrer’s Manhattan studio apartment, a curved sofa tucks conveniently into a nook in the small living room while a cocktail table, in turn, nests into the sofa.

In the same vein as focal points, you can think of this like creating a moment of surprise – an accent that draws the eye yet strikes visual interest within the space. Plus, painted walls require less work than applying vibrant wall coverings. However, this doesn’t mean you only have one option – being white – dark and light colors work equally well.

The Eclectic style tends to be more an interior design approach versus an external one because its results tend to be built up over time. That said, in some intentional designs, it is possible to produce an architectural approach for a home structure utilizing an Eclectic approach. Eclectic decor breaks molds, defies definition, and keeps everyone on their toes. Going eclectic is exciting, and challenging, and will channel reservoirs of creativity within you didn't realize you possessed. It's all about thinking outside of the box, pushing the envelope, and being fearless in the face of interior decor norms.

The Fall of the House of Usher Edgar Allen Poe

the fall of the house of usher book

The last three lines of the song (“Through the pale door, | A hideous throng rush out forever, | And laugh — but smile no more”) describe the horrible wailing of the person now that their reason has been overthrown. Although the person described in the song isn’t literally Roderick, the description of physical and emotional deterioration evokes his own, showing self-awareness of his pitiful state. And now, some days of bitter grief having elapsed, an observable change came over the features of the mental disorder of my friend. He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue—but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. The once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance.

The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe

Its proprietor, Roderick Usher, had been one of my boon companions in boyhood; but many years had elapsed since our last meeting. A letter, however, had lately reached me in a distant part of the country—a letter from him—which, in its wildly importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a personal reply. The writer spoke of acute bodily illness—of a mental disorder which oppressed him—and of an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady. It was the manner in which all this, and much more, was said—it was the apparent heart that went with his request—which allowed me no room for hesitation; and I accordingly obeyed forthwith what I still considered a very singular summons.

the fall of the house of usher book

It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit, of his earnest desire to see me, and of the solace he expected me to afford him. He entered, at some length, into what he conceived to be the nature of his malady. It was, he said, a constitutional and a family evil, and one for which he despaired to find a remedy—a mere nervous affection, he immediately added, which would undoubtedly soon pass off. Some of these, as he detailed them, interested and bewildered me; although, perhaps, the terms, and the general manner of the narration had their weight. I have said that the sole effect of my somewhat childish experiment—that of looking down within the tarn—had been to deepen the first singular impression.

SparkNotes—the stress-free way to a better GPA

The worldly reason, however, assigned for this singular proceeding, was one which I did not feel at liberty to dispute. The brother had been led to his resolution (so he told me) by consideration of the unusual character of the malady of the deceased, of certain obtrusive and eager inquiries on the part of her medical men, and of the remote and exposed situation of the burial-ground of the family. I will not deny that when I called to mind the sinister countenance of the person whom I met upon the staircase, on the day of my arrival at the house, I had no desire to oppose what I regarded as at best but a harmless, and by no means an unnatural, precaution.

For a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold, then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death-agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. Our books—the books which, for years, had formed no small portion of the mental existence of the invalid—were, as might be supposed, in strict keeping with this character of phantasm. One favourite volume was a small octavo edition of the Directorium Inquisitorum, by the Dominican Eymeric de Gironne; and there were passages in Pomponius Mela, about the old African Satyrs and Ægipans, over which Usher would sit dreaming for hours. His chief delight, however, was found in the perusal of an exceedingly rare and curious book in quarto Gothic—the manual of a forgotten church—the Vigilae Mortuorum secundum Chorum Ecclesiae Maguntinae. In the manner of my friend I was at once struck with an incoherence—an inconsistency; and I soon found this to arise from a series of feeble and futile struggles to overcome an habitual trepidancy—an excessive nervous agitation. For something of this nature I had indeed been prepared, no less by his letter, than by reminiscences of certain boyish traits, and by conclusions deduced from his peculiar physical conformation and temperament.

thought on “A Summary and Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’”

Some scholars have argued that Madeline does not even exist, reducing her to a shared figment Roderick’s and the narrator’s imaginations. But Madeline proves central to the symmetrical and claustrophobic logic of the tale. Madeline stifles Roderick by preventing him from seeing himself as essentially different from her. DURING THE WHOLE of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it was—but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible.

the fall of the house of usher book

Madeline is buried before she has actually died because her similarity to Roderick is like a coffin that holds her identity. Madeline also suffers from problems typical for women in -nineteenth--century literature. She invests all of her identity in her body, whereas Roderick possesses the powers of intellect. In spite of this disadvantage, Madeline possesses the power in the story, almost superhuman at times, as when she breaks out of her tomb. She thus counteracts Roderick’s weak, nervous, and immobile disposition.

Other Poe Influences In The Fall Of The House Of Usher

It had been used, apparently, in remote feudal times, for the worst purposes of a donjon-keep, and, in later days, as a place of deposit for powder, or some other highly combustible substance, as a portion of its floor, and the whole interior of a long archway through which we reached it, were carefully sheathed with copper. Its immense weight caused an unusually sharp grating sound, as it moved upon its hinges. Upon my entrance, Usher arose from a sofa on which he had been lying at full length, and greeted me with a vivacious warmth which had much in it, I at first thought, of an overdone cordiality—of the constrained effort of the ennuyé man of the world. A glance, however, at his countenance, convinced me of his perfect sincerity. We sat down; and for some moments, while he spoke not, I gazed upon him with a feeling half of pity, half of awe. Surely, man had never before so terribly altered, in so brief a period, as had Roderick Usher!

Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. Roderick Usher is a gifted poet and artist, whose talents the narrator praises before sharing a poem Usher wrote, titled ‘The Haunted Palace’.

This opinion, in its general form, was that of the sentience of all vegetable things. But, in his disordered fancy, the idea had assumed a more daring character, and trespassed, under certain conditions, upon the kingdom of inorganization. I lack words to express the full extent, or the earnest abandon of his persuasion. The belief, however, was connected (as I have previously hinted) with the gray stones of the home of his forefathers. Its evidence—the evidence of the sentience—was to be seen, he said, (and I here started as he spoke,) in the gradual yet certain condensation of an atmosphere of their own about the waters and the walls. The result was discoverable, he added, in that silent, yet importunate and terrible influence which for centuries had moulded the destinies of his family, and which made him what I now saw him—what he was.

All eight episodes were released on Netflix on October 12, 2023, each directed by either Flanagan or Michael Fimognari, with the latter also acting as cinematographer for the entire series. As if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell—the huge antique panels to which the speaker pointed, threw slowly back, upon the instant, ponderous and ebony jaws. It was the work of the rushing gust—but then without those doors there did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady Madeline of Usher. There was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame.

The Fall of the House of Usher TV Mini Series 2023

the fall of the house of usher book

A sensation of stupor oppressed me, as my eyes followed her retreating steps. When a door, at length, closed upon her, my glance sought instinctively and eagerly the countenance of the brother—but he had buried his face in his hands, and I could only perceive that a far more than ordinary wanness had overspread the emaciated fingers through which trickled many passionate tears. The crossing of borders pertains vitally to the Gothic horror of the tale.

The ballad concerns a royal palace which was once filled with joy and song, until ‘evil things’ attacked the king’s palace and made it a desolate shadow of what it once was. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies.

Another factor that helps us understand the differences between the series and the book is the story length of The Fall of the House of Usher. Mike Flanagan created a series that counts eight episodes, telling the story of the Usher family starting when Roderick Usher was a kid. On the one hand, the Netflix series covers decades, from the 90s to today; on the other, the short story by Edgar Allan Poe faces only the last few days of Roderick’s life.

Share this story:

He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions. His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking.

In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets. It was, indeed, a tempestuous yet sternly beautiful night, and one wildly singular in its terror and its beauty. I say that even their exceeding density did not prevent our perceiving this—yet we had no glimpse of the moon or stars—nor was there any flashing forth of the lightning.

thought on “A Summary and Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’”

The tale is characterized by its atmospheric setting, vivid descriptions, and exploration of themes like madness, decay, and the blurred lines between reality and the supernatural. Poe’s masterful storytelling creates a sense of foreboding and unease, making The Fall of the House of Usher a classic of American Gothic literature. Shortly after the narrator’s arrival, Madeline does die, and Roderick opts to keep her body in one of the home’s creepy vaults, worried that her unusual sickness would attract questions. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ can also be analysed as a deeply telling autobiographical portrait, in which Roderick Usher represents, or reflects, Poe himself.

Plot

For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced. Poe implies incestuous relations sustained the genetic line and that Roderick and Madeline are the products of extensive intermarriage within the Usher family. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion.

Who entereth herein, a conqueror hath bin;     Who slayeth the dragon, the shield he shall win. VI.And travellers now within that valley,     Through the red-litten windows seeVast forms that move fantastically     To a discordant melody; While, like a rapid ghastly river,     Through the pale door,A hideous throng rush out forever,     And laugh—but smile no more. Here’s a quick rundown of the gothic tales that The Fall of the House of Usher pulls from. While many people refer to the weeks leading up to Halloween as spooky season, if you’re a horror fan, it’s essentially Mike Flanagan season. Since 2018, the prolific creator has developed several of Netflix’s buzziest horror titles, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club. This is an abridged summary and analysis of "The Fall of the House of Usher." For the complete study guide (including quotes, literary devices, analysis of the major characters, and more), click here.

Roderick eventually declares that he has been hearing these sounds for days, and that they are being made by his sister, who was in fact alive when she was entombed. In Sara Trent's modern retelling of Poe's classic, "The Fall of the House of Usher," readers are thrust into a world of eerie desolation and creeping dread. As George explores the crumbling Usher estate, he uncovers a family plagued by illness and haunted by dark secrets. The mansion itself seems to pulse with malevolent energy, threatening to consume all who enter. With its gripping narrative and chilling atmosphere, Trent's adaptation offers a fresh and unsettling take on a timeless literary masterpiece. The antique volume which I had taken up was the “Mad Trist” of Sir Launcelot Canning; but I had called it a favourite of Usher's more in sad jest than in earnest; for, in truth, there is little in its uncouth and unimaginative prolixity which could have had interest for the lofty and spiritual ideality of my friend.

The claustrophobia of the mansion affects the relations among characters. For example, the narrator realizes late in the game that Roderick and Madeline are twins, and this realization occurs as the two men prepare to entomb Madeline. The cramped and confined setting of the burial tomb metaphorically spreads to the features of the characters. Because the twins are so similar, they cannot develop as free individuals.

Flanagan also borrowed other elements from the poet’s oeuvre to construct the eight-episode series. The trailer features a raven motif and the line “nevermore,” which both nod to Poe’s 1845 poem “The Raven.” And Carla Gugino plays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose name is an anagram of the bird. One stormy, sleepless night, the narrator tries to calm Roderick by reading him a book, but they’re interrupted by the house’s mysterious sounds.

As Roderick talks about his sister’s illness, the narrator sees her pass through a distant part of the house. As the narrator reads of the knight's forcible entry into the dwelling, he and Roderick hear cracking and ripping sounds from somewhere in the house. When the dragon's death cries are described, a real shriek is heard, again within the house. As he relates the shield falling from off the wall, a hollow metallic reverberation can be heard throughout the house. At first, the narrator ignores the noises, but Roderick becomes increasingly hysterical.

The narrator tells Roderick that the gas is a natural phenomenon, not altogether uncommon. The story explicitly ties the physical House of Usher to the Usher lineage, stating that the peasants in that domain use the phrase “House of Usher” for both. However, the connection between the house and the family runs deeper than linguistic shorthand. The decrepit house acts as a physical manifestation of the Usher family. The narrator observes the house as having an almost human-like quality, describing its windows as “eye-like.” Just as Roderick appears to radiate his own melancholy, so too does the house have a depressing air.

Barbie Dreamhouse Playset Mattel

The millennium's dream houses might have updated touches, but Los-Angeles-based designer Amy Sklar says they represent a health mix between old and new. "After the Victorian foray, we started to to see what looks and feels not dissimilar to the good old 70's townhouse," she explains. Since square footage is at a premium, the Motorhouse isn't as dreamy as some of its predecessors—but might we argue it offers something better? From a practical footprint to a breakfast nook that transforms into a bed, this version proves that home can be anywhere—regardless of its size or location. To bring the doll’s world to cinematic life for the buzzy Hollywood movie “Barbie,” four life-size Dreamhouses were erected at studios in Britain, leading to a shortage in a supply of pink paint. The 20,000 square-foot attraction allows fans to step inside Barbie's life-sized Dreamhouse, try on one of Barbie's careers for size and even get in the driver's seat of a Barbie Camper Van designed by West Coast Customs.

Now she’s hitting the big screen in the “Barbie” movie, reportedly made for $100 million. Production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer aimed to create an “idealized version of Palm Springs,” Ms. Greenwood said.. As a child, Maddie Bone, a 28-year-old brand designer, was given a hand-me-down Dreamhouse from a family friend. She felt like she hit the jackpot — it was in mint condition, and it even came with furniture. Cities were shrinking in size and wealth, as white flight followed desegregation efforts and more areas adopted the model of Levittown, a Long Island community of roughly 17,000 homes that look startlingly alike. While the toy’s debut could have been an act of feminist revolt, it was also about making money — perhaps primarily so.

Though it might’ve been successful marketing, Mattel’s pink dousing would later be criticized for perpetuating gender stereotypes. "It's nostalgic and reminds us of our childhood. We're all in our last year of our 20s and Barbie was such a huge thing," one girl explained. "And she still is... she's evolved a lot with the times." When you enter, the first place you walk through is Barbie's living room. The explosion of pink and bright colors sets a fun tone for the visit.

"I think we're all here because we appreciate Barbie's legacy. She's timeless," one visitor shared.

In 2021, the toy maker said it “fell short” by failing to include an Asian doll in a line of Tokyo Olympics-themed Barbies. In January, there was some backlash to Asian “You Can Be Anything” Barbies that seemed stereotypical. One was a violinist and the other a doctor in panda scrubs. “There are so many Asian American athletes but they’re just not propped up in a way that athletes of other racial groups are,” said Cheryan, who researches cultural stereotypes and their impact on race and gender disparities.

How much would the Barbie DreamHouse cost in real life?

The share that were first-time homeowners was the lowest it’s been since at least 1981. And, the median home price exceeded $400,000 for the first time. “The size of the average American house rose from about 1,500 square feet in 1970 to more than 2,300 square feet in 2001, with a particularly big growth spurt” in the late 1990s, The Times reported.

Young singles hoping to find dates flocked to fern bars. Designed to make women feel comfortable in a bar setting, they were filled with homey, domestic décor. To impress men, Ms. Brown instructed women on having a “wall of pictures,” a “sexy kitchen” and plenty of books — features found in Barbie’s townhouse. “If you are to be a glamorous, sophisticated woman that exciting things happen to, you need an apartment and you need to live in it alone!

They used cheap fake grass — the higher quality fake grass appeared too realistic. Mattel later redesigned the Dreamhouse elevator to accommodate the wheelchair. Barbie’s signature pink began increasingly popping up in the 1970s, part of Mattel’s effort to brand toys to stand out from competitors, said Mr. Burrichter.

The year the house came out, Elliot Handler, Mattel’s president and husband of Barbie inventor Ms. Handler, told Time magazine how the company manufactured accessories that were part of the Barbie ecosystem in order to boost sales. “You get hooked on one and you have to buy the other,” he said. Now, Ms. Dalsing lives in Saint Joseph, Mo., in what she called her own dream house. “We got to pick everything out and give our daughters a nice, shiny, new home.” It’s also a ranch home, just like Barbie’s. This was contrary to many early dollhouses, which were made with the intent of teaching young girls domestic tasks.

The World of Barbie is an immersive experience in Los Angeles where fans get to celebrate the many career and lifestyle iterations of the iconic doll. I took my Barbie obsessed 4-year-old daughter, and even though she'll be too young to enjoy the upcoming fantastical comedy Barbie, it turns out no one is too young (or old) to have some fun in Barbie's world. During our one-hour stroll through the 20,000 square-foot attraction, I was reminded why Barbie hasn't gone out of style for 64 years.

The donation aims to support and empower Asian American women and girls while building a community that fosters education and mentorship. When Yamaguchi became a household name in the ‘90s, most Asian American children were growing up feeling like toys-aren’t-us kids. If you were an Asian parent looking for an Asian doll in the U.S., you likely turned to independent mail-order companies or waited until you were visiting your country of heritage. Aspects of the Dreamhouses are meant to appear “architecturally implausible” to keep things toylike, said Ms. Spencer. The four Dreamhouses had no walls, and there were also no toilets, no shadows, no color white.

The production also features a museum exhibit where guests can see how Barbie, her Dreamhouse and her various vehicles have evolved over the years. You can even see the Barbie doll that started it all, clad in a black and white striped swimsuit and her iconic ponytail. "All races, genders, non-genders, ages — I think it really just goes to show why so many people love the brand. People can see themselves in practically any Barbie now." Organizers say World of Barbie was designed for multiple generations in mind, from little tots to adults who grew up with the iconic doll. With its multi-story waterslide—the longest in Barbie history, according to Mattel—it's easy to write off the 2023 Dreamhouse as pure fantasy. However, when you look a little closer, you'll notice this property is decked out with amenities that speak to what the modern-day homeowner wants.

When the fashion icon turned the big 6-0, her dream team decided she needed new digs to mark the milestone. Her reinvented DreamHouse, which retails for $179, has three stories, eight rooms, an outdoor area, a rooftop pool and slide, a working elevator, and a garage. Other highlights include a patio, fire pit, and garden. With so much pink and fun, feminine touches, the '90s were arguably a great decade for dream houses—but why stop at a house?
